Mitch’s teaching philosophy is that anyone who wants to play the piano should become a piano student. No previous experience required! Each lesson starts with a cheerful greeting, a recap of the week, and a chance to ask questions. When working with beginners, Mitch makes sure his students understand the current and previous week's assignments. He works with them to solidify old concepts, learn new ones, and play enjoyable music that puts conceptual knowledge to use. As students progress, he has them make more of their own decisions and helps them to self-assess their work.
Mitch specializes in neurodiverse learners and intentionally welcomes students with any combination of ADHD, ASD, dyslexia, trauma, and mental illness. He also enjoys working with students who struggle with motivation or who just feel like they don’t fit in elsewhere. He enthusiastically invites all students and families into his studio, regardless of race, color, religious affiliation, national origin, cultural heritage, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, family structure, disability, mental health status, political affiliation, physical appearance, or personal style. The only requirement a desire to learn!
A wide variety of performances and assessments are available to Mitch’s students. He encourages, but does not require, participation in K&S recitals and various other programs outside K&S.
Outside of work, Mitch likes to study new languages, try new foods, travel with his husband, sing karaoke with friends, and (surprise!) play the piano.
